Manuel, a cowherd, kills the landowner he works for and runs with his wife Rosa into the sertão, the burnt northeast of Brazil. There he attaches himself first to Sebastião, a black preacher who has declared himself a prophet, and then to Corisco, a white bandit. Both promise deliverance and both want blood, and behind them walks a man hired to kill them both. Rocha builds the film like a folk ballad, with the plot sung by a narrator. It is a founding work of Cinema Novo.
