What Blanche Fury Is About

This English period film directed by Marc Allégret opens with Blanche, a governess without money. She takes a position at the estate of her wealthy relations, the Fury family, and marries her dull cousin Laurence to improve her situation, and they have a daughter. Boredom arrives quickly, and Blanche begins a stormy affair with Philip Thorn, who works with the horses. Between them they devise a plan to murder their way to control of the estate. The film neither excuses Blanche nor turns her into a monster, so her lack of options and her ambition stay visible at the same time. It was shot in colour and is dark and ornate. Valerie Hobson and Stewart Granger lead. The ending is left unspoiled.
