Blindfolded

Jontti and Länki are two nine year old boys. Both are growing up in a Finnish seaside town in the sixties. Länki’s father is said to have died at sea, and the boy makes his own sense of the rumour. He dreams of running away on a ship to the water where his father disappeared. Jontti’s father is still around, but he is not the man he appears to be. The boy works this out slowly. His dad leaves home to live with another woman. Jontti decides to win him back and sets about it with everything he has. The two friends hold on to each other inside the same absence. Their games and their quarrels feed on it alike. The town is small and the sea is visible from everywhere. The story is built at a child’s height. Adult weakness is seen from below. The film keeps comedy and sadness side by side. It neither inflates the ending nor makes it easy. Martti Suosalo and Walter Gröhn appear in the ninety one minute film, a Finnish production Matti Ijäs finished in 1999.
