Bloody Daddy

Ali Abbas Zafar's 2023 Indian film is a remake of the French Sleepless Night and confines its events to a single night in a large hotel in Gurugram. Sumair, working in narcotics, has to give back the cocaine he seized because his son has been taken; the floors, kitchen and car park of the hotel turn into a trap. The film largely keeps the tight construction of the original and uses the single-location constraint well: the chase in the kitchen, the tension built in narrow corridors. Shahid Kapoor carries the part, but the character's moral ambiguity is softened in the remake, which weakens the original's strongest quality. The action is cleanly shot. Who it's for: viewers who like thrillers set over one night and Indian action cinema. Who it's not for: anyone who knows the original, or avoiding violence and drug content.
