What Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes Is About
The documentary is about the idea behind the Blue Note record label, founded in 1939: giving musicians licence to push at the limits and to look for their own expression without compromise. It brings together recording sessions made now, rare archive footage and conversations with people who worked with the label. Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lou Donaldson, Norah Jones and Robert Glasper are among those who speak. Why what the label left behind still matters in the political climate of the present is part of the account as well. The new sessions recorded in the studio sit in the same room as the old records, and two generations listen to each other. Sophie Huber’s eighty five minute documentary was completed in 2019.
