What Bol Is About

In Lahore, a traditionalist healer heads a large household of seven daughters and one son. The son, Saifi, is born intersex, and the father never accepts it; the house cracks slowly around that refusal. The story is narrated by Zainab, the eldest daughter, who has been sentenced to death and asked, as a last request, to tell her life, so everything opens backwards out of that night. Shoaib Mansoor's film was argued about fiercely in Pakistan and became one of the highest earning films the country has made. It runs an open argument about women's rights, family size and capital punishment, and it does so from inside one household without appointing anybody as a spokesman. The title simply means speak.
