What Breathing Is About

Roman is nineteen and in a juvenile prison. To get out on licence he needs steady work, and the only place that will take him is the Vienna city mortuary service, collecting and washing the dead. The work puts him in front of death every day. Then a body arrives with his own surname on it. She turns out not to be his mother, but for the first time Roman starts wondering about his own past. Karl Markovics's first feature. He came to it from acting and builds the film with almost no dialogue; Roman learning to speak is the real story. His search for the mother who left him as a baby comes out of the same place.
