What Bridge to the Sun Is About
The film tells the true story of the American Gwen Terasaki. She meets a Japanese diplomat, falls in love and marries him, but when the Second World War begins she is caught between two countries. In America she meets hostility because of her Japanese husband, in Japan because she is American, and that hostility seeps into every part of daily life. The film tells the war not from the front but from inside a house where both sides are questioning their own citizens. The account takes the bond between the couple as a matter of endurance as much as a love story. Carroll Baker and James Shigeta appear in Etienne Perier’s hundred and thirteen minute film, completed in 1961.
