Bro Daddy

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, this 2022 Malayalam comedy is built on what two generations are hiding at the same time. John Kattady and his wife Annamma want to marry their son Eesho to Anna, the daughter of old family friends. The young pair show little enthusiasm, and what the parents do not know is what has already happened out of their sight. The film takes the family comedy shape Malayalam cinema returns to often and plants a secret inside it, drawing its tension from the timing of the reveal. Mohanlal and Prithviraj playing father and son is the main draw. It went straight to streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar. The tone stays light; even where the subject turns serious the film never chooses to make anyone uncomfortable. Who it's for: viewers who want Malayalam family comedy and the Mohanlal and Prithviraj pairing. Who it's not for: anyone wanting sharp humour or the premise genuinely examined.
