What Broken Silence Is About
Montxo Armendáriz's 2001 Spanish film follows Lucía, twenty-one, returning to her mountain village in the winter of 1944. She meets Manuel again, the village blacksmith, who is helping the men who went up into the mountains, the maquis who kept resisting Franco after the civil war had ended. The closer Lucía gets to him, the more she understands what the silence of the village means: surveillance, fear, deaths nobody speaks about. The film neither turns the armed resistance into legend nor belittles it, and it shows that most of the price was paid by the women left behind. Lucía Jiménez and Juan Diego Botto lead.
