What Bronco Bullfrog Is About
Barney Platts-Mills’s first feature, from 1969, is set around Stratford in East London. Del, an apprentice, and his friends break into a cafe and come away with ninepence and some cake, then get pulled into something larger by a boy just out of borstal. When Del falls for Irene the two decide to run, from their families and from the law, with no money and nowhere to go, and the film is unusually honest about how short a distance that gets them. Everyone on screen is an amateur; Platts-Mills found them through Joan Littlewood’s theatre workshops in Stratford. Shot in black and white and scored by the band Audience, it is a late and hard example of British realism, since restored by the BFI.
