Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin

Bayard Rustin was an American political activist. He worked inside the struggle for Black rights. He organised the 1963 March on Washington. The march became one of the turning points of the movement. Rustin’s name, though, mostly stayed in the background. The documentary looks at why that was. The man never hid that he was gay. At that time even progressive circles did not welcome such openness. Rustin was kept in the background because of it. The documentary covers both his public and his private life. His opposition to war and his socialist work are described as well. The film was built from archival footage and new interviews. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X appear in the footage. Bayard Rustin speaks in the eighty five minute documentary. It is an American production Bennett Singer and Nancy D. Kates finished in 2003.
