Buddenbrooks - 1. Teil

The film was adapted from the novel by Thomas Mann. It was made in two parts and this is the first of them. The events take place in Germany in the middle of the nineteenth century. The Buddenbrooks are a family of merchants. Their business and their standing have run for generations. Consul Jean Buddenbrook is at the head of the family. His daughter Antonia is called Tony at home. A businessman named Bendix Grünlich comes courting her. Tony makes fun of the man and does not want him. The son Christian falls for an actress. The gossip that follows embarrasses his father. The man sends his son abroad. On the holiday she flees to, Tony meets Morten Schwarzkopf. The two of them fall in love. Her father, though, talks her into marrying Grünlich for the family’s standing. Liselotte Pulver and Hansjörg Felmy appear in the ninety nine minute film, a German production Alfred Weidenmann finished in 1959.
