Bugsy Malone

Two gangs are at war in 1920s New York. All the parts are played by children and the guns fire cream. The film uses every convention of the gangster picture unchanged, and the only difference is the cast; that choice makes the narrative both funny and oddly uncomfortable. The songs are sung by adult voices and the mismatch is left deliberately. Alan Parker wrote and directed; it is his first cinema film. Jodie Foster and Scott Baio are in the cast. Who it's for: those who like unusual musicals and games with genre. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a children's film; the narrative has children play the adult world, and that is not for everyone.
