What Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai Is About
In present-day Japan a company employee, after his fiancée attempts suicide, starts telling the history of his own family. He goes back seven generations: from the Tokugawa era to the present, in every generation one of his ancestors sacrificed himself in the name of loyalty to his lord. Some in battle, some on an order, some without asking anything. The chain reaches to the present. Tadashi Imai's film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963. Kinnosuke Nakamura plays all seven generations. The film's argument is plain: what gets told as samurai honour is really an obedience carried on under the name of loyalty, and that obedience has now passed to the company. The scenes of violence are very hard for their period.
