Bushman

David Schickele's 1971 American film follows the daily life of a young Nigerian in San Francisco. Gabriel teaches, meets people and sees the city's racial tension up close. The film moves between documentary and fiction. During the shoot the lead actor was detained and removed from the country; the production broke off, and rather than hiding this the film made it its own subject. It was shot in black and white. The tone carries the unrest of the late sixties. The film went unseen for a long time and was later restored. Who it's for: viewers of independent American cinema and documentary of the period. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a completed narrative; the film deliberately stays unfinished.
