Buya Hamka Vol. 1

Fajar Bustomi's 2023 Indonesian film tells the life of the scholar and writer Hamka. Born in West Sumatra, he became a nationally known figure through preaching, journalism and literature. This first part covers the early period. His years in publishing, the decisions he made under occupation and the argument those caused sit at the centre; the film defends Hamka while still recording the criticism. Vino G. Bastian takes the lead. The scale of the production is considered large for Indonesian cinema, and it was planned as a series. Who it's for: viewers of Indonesian history and religious biography. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a detached examination; the film approaches its subject with reverence.
