Made in 1914, silent, and close to two and a half hours; slow for a modern viewer, but a great deal of cinema came out of it. The child Cabiria is taken by pirates and sold as a slave in Carthage, and is about to be sacrificed to Moloch when a Roman spy, Fulvius, and his powerful slave Maciste rescue her. Hannibal crossing the Alps and the siege of Syracuse run through it. Pastrone put the camera on rails and broke the habit of the fixed frame. Maciste went on to headline dozens of later films.
