What Cadence Is About
A young white soldier is thrown into a military stockade for drunkenness and insubordination and finds a cell block of Black prisoners. Instead of the expected hostility a shared enemy emerges: the racist and increasingly unstable sergeant who runs the place. Martin Sheen directs and plays the sergeant, and the soldier is his son Charlie Sheen. The block itself, Laurence Fishburne included, is the best thing in the film. The structure is open to argument, though: the lives of these men are once again narrated through the arrival of a white soldier, and he stays at the centre throughout.
