What Café Derby Is About
The year is 1985. Georges is a market trader born to it, a man who can sell anything to anyone at any time. When he hears the Pope is coming to Belgium, he sees his chance. Café Derby is up for rent, right beside the grounds where tens of thousands will gather for an open air mass. Georges is certain he will make a small fortune. But his wife and five children are not convinced; it would mean another move in too short a time. He goes ahead with it anyway. The film drags a family along behind one man’s enthusiasm. The thin line between hope and recklessness is the real subject. Wim Opbrouck and Chloë Daxhelet appear in Lenny Van Wesemael’s ninety seven minute Belgian film, completed in 2015.
