Call Me Thief

The events take place in Cape Town in the nineteen sixties. Young Abraham is arrested for a petty crime. Inside prison he has to make room for himself. He finds that he is good at telling stories. The stories he tells in the cell draw an audience. They call him the prison cinema. The gift brings him respect and protection. His childhood friend finds no such protection. He is left under the power of the cell boss. That relationship is one forced on him. The film shows the gang order inside South African prisons. After his release Abraham turns to writing. He meets his childhood sweetheart again. But his old friends pull him into a murder. John W. Fredericks wrote the screenplay out of his own life. Dann-Jaques Mouton and Christian Bennett appear in the one hundred fifty minute film, a South African production Daryne Joshua finished in 2016.
