What Cannery Row Is About
Cannery Row in Monterey in the 1940s: canneries, shacks, drifters and one brothel. Doc is a marine biologist newly arrived there; he spends his days collecting specimens from the tide pools, and in the evening there is only the one house to go to. That is where he meets Suzy. She has just arrived too, has no money, and is working there because she has to. The two fall for each other, and neither can quite put their pride down. David S. Ward directs, adapting two of John Steinbeck's novels, with Nick Nolte as Doc and Debra Winger as Suzy. It was shot on a set built in a studio; the shore and the street are both constructed. A narrator keeps stepping into the story.
