Fractured

Fikret Reyhan's 2020 Turkish film begins with Fatih returning from working in Britain. Ayhan, who worked alongside him there, demands a large sum from him over money sent to the family, and that demand brings out everything suppressed inside the household for years. The film's strength is that the matter is not debt but hierarchy within a family: the question of who owes what to whom sits where love and accounting are confused with each other. Reyhan builds the story largely in one house and across few scenes. The playing is restrained and there is almost no music. The pace is slow and the conflict advances quietly. Who it's for: viewers who like Turkish independent cinema and stories of tension inside a family. Who it's not for: anyone wanting incident, or a clear conclusion.
