What Charlie Chan in Egypt Is About
Charlie Chan goes to Egypt after antiquities stolen from an excavation. As the investigation proceeds it stops being a theft: the body of the expedition's missing leader is found inside the wrappings of a mummy. Chan works his way through the desert, the tomb chambers and the members of the expedition itself, looking for the killer. Louis King's 1935 film is one of the better known entries in the series. Watching it now means seeing two things at once: Chan is played by a white actor, Warner Oland, and the servant character played by Stepin Fetchit repeats the racist conventions of the period directly. Rita Hayworth appears in a small role, still billed under the name Cansino.
