What Chicago Is About
Roxie Hart drinks, cheats on her husband, shoots the lover who walks out on her, and then finds her way clear of an indictment. The film comes from Maurine Watkins's 1926 play, which itself came from a real Chicago trial that made a great deal of noise. Frank Urson is the credited director, but the picture is substantially Cecil B. DeMille's work; with a religious epic of his still in cinemas, DeMille apparently thought it unseemly to put his name on something this cynical. Long believed lost, it was restored in 2006. Phyllis Haver plays Roxie.
