What Children of the Beehive Is About
A soldier just repatriated after the war, whose name we are never given, comes upon a group of war orphans scraping a living out of black market work and takes them under his wing. They set out together, walking to find work, to find food, and in the end to belong somewhere. Hiroshi Shimizu made the film immediately after the war, with real orphaned children and on real roads. The soldier has nowhere to go either, and the journey is happening to both of them at once. The account does not ask for pity; it shows how the children look at one another and the walking itself, and makes no large statements. The eighty six minute Japanese film was completed in 1948.
