Citizen of a Kind

Park Young-ju's 2024 Korean film follows Duk-hee, a single mother defrauded by a voice phishing operation, who sets out to find the gang herself after the police show no interest. She makes contact with one of the call centre workers who phoned her, and the trail leads to an operation in China. The film is adapted from a real case, and its best quality is showing the fraud not only as a crime but as a system of labour exploitation: the people in the call centre are themselves held in a kind of captivity. Ra Mi-ran's performance builds a stubborn ordinariness without slipping into heroism. The story swings at times between comedy and thriller, and not all of those transitions work. Who it's for: viewers who like Korean true-story adaptations and films about ordinary people up against institutional indifference. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a single consistent tone, or fast action from a crime film.
