What Combat Obscura Is About
In 2011 and 2012 Miles Lagoze was the official cameraman of a Marine battalion in Afghanistan; what he shot was meant for recruitment films and for the archive. This documentary is made out of the part of that material which was never used: waiting, boredom, swearing, cannabis, friction with local people, wounds and death. On leaving the service Lagoze had the footage declassified, and years later he cut it into a film. The account adds no explanatory narration; that these images came from the same camera as the recruitment films is the point of the whole thing. The footage was shot in the Sangin and Kajaki districts of Afghanistan. The seventy minute American documentary was completed in 2018.
