Conflict in the Nile

Young and green, Muhasab sets out with his steadier friend Mujahed. They are going up the Nile to Cairo. The aim is to sell their boat, the Bride of the Nile, and buy a barge in its place, so the elders of the village can compete better in trade. But a ruthless rival stands against them and means to see that the two never reach Cairo. The journey grows more tangled still when Nargis, a dancer, is found hiding in the hold. The film uses the river as both a road and a closed space. Omar Sharif, Hind Rostom and Rushdy Abaza appear in Atef Salem’s hundred and twenty five minute Egyptian film, completed in 1959.
