Copa 71

James Erskine and Rachel Ramsay's 2024 documentary covers the women's world cup held in Mexico in 1971. More than a hundred thousand spectators watched the tournament, but the international football federation did not recognise it and the event never entered the official record. The material is largely footage considered lost. The team searched archives and found the match recordings; the women who played see them for the first time fifty years later, and their reactions form the emotional centre. The narrative also covers why women's football was institutionalised so late; in many countries women were formally forbidden to play, and those bans continued after the tournament. Who it's for: those interested in sports history and the recovery of forgotten events. Who it's not for: viewers expecting match coverage; the documentary's weight is in context and testimony.
