What Crimson Bat, the Blind Swordswoman Is About
Oichi is abandoned by her mother as a child and blinded by a lightning strike. When the man protecting her is killed, a wandering ronin teaches her the sword; she grows into a bounty hunter and travels the countryside looking for her mother and for her revenge. The character came out of a manga by Teruo Tanashita, created as an answer to the enormous success of Zatoichi, the difference being that the swordfighter is a woman from the start. Shochiku made four films between 1969 and 1970, the first two directed by Sadatsugu Matsuda, with Yōko Matsuyama playing Oichi in all of them.
