What Crocodile Dundee Is About
The idea came to Paul Hogan in New York: what would a Northern Territory bushman make of the city? The film Peter Faiman directed draws on a real figure, Rod Ansell. The Kakadu material was shot at the end of the dry season because crocodiles were less active there then; the unit spent six weeks working out of an abandoned uranium camp, filmed the crocodile attack at Girraween Lagoon outside Darwin, then six more weeks in New York. Two versions exist: the Australian one, and an international print in which much of the Australian slang was swapped for wider wording and which runs slightly shorter. At the 44th Golden Globes Hogan won best actor in a musical or comedy, while the film lost best musical or comedy picture and Linda Kozlowski lost supporting actress. It was nominated at the 59th Academy Awards for a screenplay written directly for the screen, and at the 1987 BAFTAs for leading actor and original screenplay. A good fit if you want a film whose star said he was knowingly handing Americans the image they already held of Australia. Not for viewers who want the 1986 print; the 2025 Encore Cut removed scenes that could be read as transphobic and homophobic, and it becomes the standard version for later releases.
