What Crossing Borders Is About
Madrid under Franco, 1960. Martín and Marcos leave their families behind and go to Switzerland for work because there is no living to be made at home. The country takes them as guest workers: they have no language, the food is wrong, the rules are somebody else's. In time a life gets built, the families follow, and the children start treating Switzerland rather than Spain as their country. The real fracture comes with the decision to go back. Carlos Iglesias wrote it, directed it and acted in it, drawing on his own family's history. The title is an exchange rate: one franc, fourteen pesetas.
