What Custody Is About
Three women's paths cross at New York Family Court. Sara Diaz is raising two children alone and scraping by; when she is suspected of injuring her son, the children are taken from her. Ally Fisher has just finished law school and this is her first case. Judge Martha Schulman has been sitting in the same courtroom for years and knows exactly how the work wears a person down. James Lapine wrote and directed a film about how the system actually runs: nobody in it is acting in bad faith, but caseload, time pressure and procedure together are enough to take a family apart. Viola Davis plays Schulman, Hayden Panettiere plays Ally and Catalina Sandino Moreno plays Sara.
