D@bbe 4: The Possession

Kübra's wedding is close. Her behaviour changes; she does not sleep, her speech breaks down and those around her cannot recognise her. Her family takes her to a psychiatrist. Ebru is both a doctor and Kübra's childhood friend; she tries to explain the case on scientific ground and cannot reach a diagnosis. She watches the recordings, looks into the past, and sees that the matter is connected to Kübra's fiancé and to a family. There is a spell, and who cast it is known. Ebru does not believe it. Then she starts seeing things in her own recordings that she cannot explain. Hasan Karacadağ writes and directs. Cansu Kurgun, Irmak Örnek and Sabriye Günüç are in the cast. It is a Turkish production. It is the fourth link in the Dabbe series; each film tells an independent story and the series became the longest running work in Turkish horror. The narrative builds its fear not from the exorcism shape of Western cinema but from local accounts of jinn and spellwork; the sources are religious texts and folk belief. The film uses the form of the recorded camera; part of the events is presented as footage. This link of the series took a strong result at the Turkish box office. Its most effective side is the sound design; the fear is largely built through hearing. Its limit is length; the narrative is long and repeats in the second half. Another limit is production; the visual effects and some of the playing are weak. Who it is for: viewers who like local horror cinema and stories of jinn. Who it is not for: it is long, the sudden sound scares are frequent, and its ground in belief is not for everyone.
