What Day Off Is About
A woman who has spent forty years in the same barbershop closes it for a day and sets out on a long drive to cut the hair of an old customer who moved away and is now too ill to travel. Fu Tien-yu builds the film in her own hometown of Taichung and out of her own mother’s shop, a place its owner kept open through her husband’s death and raised three children inside. It is partly a lament for what gets thrown away in the name of convenience, and partly an argument that something as routine as a haircut still makes a bond. Wu Nien-jen produced; Lu Hsiao-fen won best actress at the Taipei Film Awards.
