What Dean Spanley Is About
In Edwardian England, Fisk Senior has neither the time nor the inclination for his son, and their regular meetings pass like a duty neither man enjoys. Then they meet an odd clergyman called Dean Spanley, and everything shifts: given enough Hungarian Tokay, the Dean starts recounting his days as a dog in a previous life. Adapted by Alan Sharp from Lord Dunsany's 1936 novella, it is funny on its premise and unexpectedly moving by the end. Sam Neill plays the Dean, with Peter O'Toole and Jeremy Northam as father and son. At the 2009 New Zealand film awards it turned twelve nominations into seven wins, one of them a supporting actor prize for O'Toole.
