What Dear Etranger Is About
Makoto is forty and in his second marriage, trying to build an ordinary family with his wife Nanae and the two daughters she brought from her first. He also has a daughter of his own, Saori, from a marriage that ended with custody going to her mother. When Nanae becomes pregnant, every balance in the household is redrawn. Adapting Kiyoshi Shigematsu’s 1996 novel, Yukiko Mishima refuses to treat the blended family as either a disaster or a miracle; she films it as a place where everyone stays slightly foreign to everyone else, and where that does not cancel the love. The film took the Special Grand Prix of the Jury at Montreal in 2017.
