Dear You

Xiaowei travels to Thailand to find the grandfather everyone calls a billionaire, who has dropped out of contact because of his debts. The story the family tells is settled: the grandfather was rich, his business collapsed, he disappeared. But Xiaowei learns something else there. The person who has been writing to his grandmother for years is not his grandfather. That discovery reopens everything the family has been telling itself. Lan Hongchun's Chinese production moves between family comedy and emotional drama, and puts the idea of the letter at the centre: things written for years and never spoken. The telling shows the grandmother as someone with a secret of her own rather than as a victim. The distance between generations, and how a family tidies up its own story, are the real subject. It runs a hundred and eighteen minutes.
