Debi

A young woman who believes she has extraordinary powers goes to a psychiatrist about it. The man she sits across from is Misir Ali, the academic known from Humayun Ahmed’s novels, who does not believe in the supernatural but does not belittle what comes before him either. The film builds its suspense not as a story of possession but as a woman’s relation to her own past and her own body, and it keeps the explanation suspended to the end. Anam Biswas directed this Bangladeshi production, adapted from Ahmed’s novel of the same name. Chanchal Chowdhury plays Misir Ali and Jaya Ahsan the young woman; Ahsan also produced, the first film out of her own company. It was supported by a state grant and opened on 19 October 2018.
