Dario Argento had jazz pianist Giorgio Gaslini write the music first and disliked it. Unable to land Pink Floyd, he found Goblin in Rome, where Claudio Simonetti won him over with two pieces written in one night. Hence the two names in the credits: Goblin wrote and played most of the score, Gaslini cues stayed in, and the Profondo Rosso single went to number one in Italy. Shooting ran mainly in Turin over sixteen weeks. The opening scene is set in the Teatro Carignano; the house of the screaming child is the Villa Scott. His working title, The Sabre-Toothed Tiger, kept up the animal names of his earlier gialli. His father, Salvatore Argento, produced. One detail matters if you watch in English. Arrow Video states on its own release that parts of the English track were never recorded or are lost, so those passages play in Italian with subtitles. The earliest BBFC record is a 1993 video, passed with cuts; the copy Arrow submitted in 2010 passed with none. A good fit if you like a solution that hangs on remembering what a painting, apparently missing from the murder flat, actually was. Not for viewers who want violence by implication; the scalding, the mechanical doll and the refuse lorry play out in front of you.
