What Dersu Uzala Is About
The Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, on his surveys of the Far East at the turn of the century, meets the native hunter Dersu Uzala. The man can read the forest, knows the weather and the animals, and sees a great deal more than the officer leading the expedition. What grows between them grows out of that difference in knowledge. Agasi Babayan’s film is the first screen adaptation of Arsenyev’s books. It is usually overshadowed by the version Kurosawa made fourteen years later and won an Oscar for, though it makes its own case for Dersu’s character and for what he does to the soldiers around him.
