What Desert Bloom Is About
Six years after the war, Jack Chismore runs a petrol station in Las Vegas, a veteran carrying something heavy back from the front and drinking on it. Rose, one of the three daughters of his wife Lily, is entering adolescence, and remembers it all years later: her stepfather’s condition, Robin, her first love, and her aunt Starr, whose visit stirs up the house. Lily takes a job with the atomic testing office and cannot tell anyone at home when the desert is about to go off. Eugene Corr uses the Nevada tests of the fifties not as background but as something settling over the family. Annabeth Gish plays Rose in her first film.
