Designation of Origin

Tomas Alzamora Munoz's 2025 Chilean film follows a small town pursuing a prize it lost to a neighbouring city. San Carlos loses the award for the best longaniza sausage in Chile to Chillan, and the townspeople decide this is an injustice. A group organises to claim the right to a designation of origin. The film begins as comedy and stays that way; underneath it lies a serious question about how local identity is constructed. A town defining itself through a food looks ridiculous from outside and is vital from within. Most of the performers are not professionals but residents of the town itself, which gives the scenes a documentary texture. The telling is light and short; the film does not stretch its subject. Who it's for: those who like Chilean cinema and provincial comedy. Who it's not for: viewers looking for high dramatic tension; there is no real crisis anywhere in the film.
