Devotion

A film about two American naval aviators during the Korean War. Jesse Brown is the US Navy's first Black combat pilot. Tom Hudner is his wingman. They fly in the same squadron and are sent to Korea when the war begins. What the film is interested in is less aerial combat than Brown's position. He wears the uniform, and everywhere he goes his race is seen first, inside his own squadron and outside it. The narrative builds that tension without exaggeration, through daily detail. His relationship with Hudner is not presented as simple friendship either; Brown does not want protecting and says so plainly. The event at the end really happened: Brown's aircraft was brought down near the Chosin Reservoir and Hudner deliberately crash-landed his own plane to reach him. The source is Adam Makos's book. Jonathan Majors plays Brown and Glen Powell plays Hudner. The flying sequences were largely shot with real aircraft and practical methods. A well-made example for anyone who likes war drama and narratives drawn from record. For a viewer wanting dense action, the film weights the characters and the combat scenes are limited.
