Die Hard 2

Renny Harlin’s 1990 sequel strands John McClane at Dulles on Christmas Eve, waiting on his wife’s flight while a renegade colonel’s mercenaries seize the airport’s controls. The countdown here is fuel, not a bomb. With the tower silenced, the danger sits in gauges aboard planes circling overhead, out of McClane’s reach until the last reel. That is no bluff: before the midpoint a jet breaks apart short of the runway and nobody walks away. Holly, meanwhile, shares her cabin with Thornburg, the reporter from the first film, so the couple’s reckoning happens somewhere the hero never enters and the leads share no frame until the finale. The script adapts Walter Wager’s novel 58 Minutes, where the waiting cop is Frank Malone at JFK and the passenger circling overhead is his daughter, not his wife. Those Dulles interiors are the Tom Bradley terminal at LAX. Denver was booked for the snow, then turned warm, so the unit moved to Michigan. Harlin separately recalls hunting for winter, laying fire foam, then losing the night to a blizzard. Britain’s 1990 cinema print was cut at classification. A good fit if you want tension read off fuel gauges above floodlit runways rather than a tower floor plan. Not for anyone who cannot shrug off a downed airliner as an action beat.
