Dilber'in Sekiz Günü

Cemal Şan's 2009 Turkish film is set in a poor village in the east. Dilber expects to marry Ali, her childhood love; when she learns it will not happen, she shuts herself in the family barn. She does not come out for eight days. The film spreads that time across the whole village; everyone debates what should be done, and the narrative shows that the one deciding is not Dilber. Nesrin Cavadzade and Fırat Tanış lead. The images are plain and the space kept narrow. The narrative proceeds without explanation. Who it's for: viewers of Turkish independent cinema and rural narratives. Who it's not for: viewers for whom scenes of pressure exerted on a woman would be difficult.
