What Disgrace Is About
A professor of literature in Cape Town loses his job and his standing when his affair with a student comes out, and goes to his daughter's farm in the Eastern Cape. There an attack takes place: his daughter is raped by three men and refuses to report it. The summary's phrase about a mess of post-apartheid politics conceals the centre of the film. Adapted from J. M. Coetzee's Booker-winning novel, which was fiercely argued over in South Africa for precisely this. A hard film, with John Malkovich making no attempt to render the man sympathetic.
