What Ditte, Child of Man Is About
Ditte was born out of wedlock and spends her childhood with the old grandmother she loves. At school she is mocked for it, and what she wants more than anything in the world is a father. When Lars Petter, a steady, thoroughly reliable herring dealer, turns up and says he is going to marry her mother, the girl is overjoyed. But then the care of three younger children falls to her, and from her selfish mother she gets nothing but complaints. She finds something to hold on to all the same, in her brothers and sisters and in Lars Petter. Tove Maes plays the lead in Bjarne Henning-Jensen’s ninety nine minute Danish film, completed in 1946.
