What Don Quixote Is About

Old Alonso Quijano, who has lost his mind reading books of chivalry, gives himself the name Don Quixote, puts on rusted armour and leaves his village to become a knight errant. His neighbour Sancho Panza goes with him on the promise of an island. Through windmills, innkeepers, caravans and noblemen who mock him, the man sees not what is there but what he wants to be there. The film follows both volumes of the novel and shows in the end the man coming back to his senses. Rafael Gil’s hundred and thirty seven minute Spanish film is one of the early adaptations of Cervantes’s novel; Rafael Rivelles and Juan Calvo appear. It was completed in 1947.
